Time for another set of birthstone fun facts! This month we’ve got some interesting history on peridot: a fresh, lime-green stone that pairs beautifully with sky blue. For those with birthdays this month, peridot would be a welcome gift, be it on a ring, necklace or set in earrings.
You can find your peridot trivia facts below:
- Today most peridot is hand-mined by Native Americans on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona. Faceted peridot from this region is rarely found above five carats in size. Fine larger peridot stones are found in Burma, and large quantities of peridot are also mined in China.
- In 1994, an exciting new deposit of fine peridot was discovered in Pakistan, 15,000 feet above sea level, on the far west side of the Himalaya Mountains.
- Peridot is found several places around the world in rocks created by volcanoes or, less common, extraterrestrial peridot can actually be found in meteorites that have fallen to Earth.
** Just as a bonus, it is also rumored that Napoleon gave peridot to Josephine as a token of his love for her.
